Response / Assessment
Informal Interaction
Teacher engages in informal talk with the students so as to create a good rapport with the students.
( Greeting and chatting……Frame some questions in advance….. to make them ready to learn…..
Good morning……are you happy…..have you had your breakfast…..are you comfortable in your seats……)

Entry Activity
Teacher shows the picture of a river , and asked to identify the picture. Then asked certain questions regarding the picture.
(i) Do you like River? Why?
(ii) Do you think the river have life?
(iii) Are you familiar with any water falls?

Link Talk
The river is linked to the poem. Teacher introduces the poem, “ The River ” to the students. Sufficient information regarding the poem is made available to the students. The poet, Caroline Ann Bowles is too introduced to them.
The title of the poem ad the name of the poet is written to the black board. The other major events are also introduced to the students.

Micro Processing of the Input
Model Recitation by the teacher
Teacher recite the poem ” The River ” with proper tone, rhythm, proper pronunciation, stress, intonation and in meaningful units.
The theme and the necessary details are also forwarded to the students. ‘The poem deals with the natural beauty of river. The flow of the river shows the journey of life to eternity. The different stages of life are brought in through the imagery used in the poem.’

Track Reading by the Pupil
Students asked to read the poem silently. When they read they are asked to underline the difficult words in that poem.

Glossary Reference
Students are asked to refer the glossary to find out the meaning of difficult words. The difficult words are; sparkle, pebbles, foliage, brawling, leaping, impetuous, brimming, tending, mortal prime, dash etc.
Teacher discusses the meaning of these words using proper examples and situations.

Collaborative Learning
Students are asked to form groups and share their ideas in groups. Students are asked to write down the new words and its meaning in their personal word list.

Mega phoning the Doubts
Each group given opportunity to raise their doubts to other groups.

Facilitation by the Teacher
Teacher helps to clarify the difficult areas which no groups could effectively tackle. Teacher also explains the difficult areas.

Scaffolding Questions
In order to make the content clearer, scaffolding questions are asked to the students. The students are asked to write down the answers.
(1)  Is the river like a child? Why?
(Yes, the river like a child. It dances and plays hide and seek behind flowers and leaves of trees.)
(2)  Why does the poet call it swelling river?
( The river is said to be swelling because it grows up in its course.)
(3)  How does the sea remind you of eternity?
(The sea cannot be measured. So it reminds of eternity)
(4)  What do the river and the sea remind the poet of?
(The river is like the human life and the sea reminds the poet of eternity.)

Presentation by the Pupil
Randomly students are selected from each group and they are asked to present the answers for the scaffolding questions.

Language Activity
Teacher shows the chart containing the hits for writing the profile of the poet, Caroline Ann Bowles. The students are asked to write down the profile of poet.

Assignment
Read the poem carefully and write down the rhyming words from that poem.
